# Direct & Literal Document Import

## Literal Import

Literal Import lets you create an Affinity course from an existing document while preserving the source material as closely as possible.

Use it when you already have approved or near-final content, such as a policy, procedure, handbook, checklist, quiz, or presentation, and want Affinity to convert it into training pages without heavily rewriting it.

### Why Use Literal Import

Choose Literal Import when the wording and structure of the source material have already been refined by your team.

This is especially useful for compliance and L\&D teams that need training to stay aligned with approved internal materials, regulatory language, or established procedures.

Literal Import is a good fit when:

* The source document is already written and approved.
* Policy or compliance wording should stay close to the original.
* The document includes procedures, definitions, tables, checklists, or quiz questions.
* You want to reduce manual work converting existing content into course pages.
* You want the final course to reflect the source document rather than a newly interpreted version of the topic.

### Key Difference From Standard AI Course Generation

Standard AI course generation creates a new course from a topic, goal, or prompt. It can use creative liberty based on source material facts and information.

Literal Import converts an existing document into a course. It strictly creates a course using the content verbatim, just formatted in the Affinity standard format.

Use this simple rule:

* If you want Affinity to create training from an idea, use standard AI course generation.
* If you want Affinity to preserve and convert existing material, use Literal Import.

For example:

* “Create a course on anti-money laundering basics” is best for standard AI generation.
* “Turn this AML policy powerpiont into a course” is best for Literal Import.

### How Literal Import Works

Literal Import reads your source document and converts it into Affinity course sections and pages.

It attempts to:

* Preserve the original wording where practical.
* Follow the document’s natural structure.
* Use headings and sections from the source to organize the course.
* Convert lists, tables, procedures, and checklists into readable course content.
* Convert clear quiz or knowledge-check content into interactive questions when possible.

The goal is not to summarize the document. The goal is to represent the document faithfully in a training format.

### Best Practices For Source Documents

Literal Import works best when the source document is clearly structured.

Before importing, try to use a document that has:

* Clear section headings.
* Short, focused paragraphs.
* Numbered steps for procedures.
* Bullet lists for requirements, responsibilities, or examples.
* Tables only where the table structure is important.
* Quiz questions grouped with their answer choices.
* Answer keys included when you want quiz questions converted into interactive questions.

You do not need to fully redesign the document before importing it. But the clearer the source structure is, the easier it is for Affinity to convert it into a course where the sections and pages match the original document.

### Quiz and Knowledge Check Handling

If the source document includes quiz questions or knowledge checks, Literal Import can often convert them into interactive question widgets.

For best results, keep each question together with:

* Its answer choices.
* Its answer key, if available.
* Any explanation or feedback text, if the source includes it.

If the correct answer is not clear from the source, Affinity may preserve the question as regular text rather than guessing.

### PowerPoint Imports

PowerPoint files may be imported in a viewer-style format when preserving the slide layout is more important than converting the content into editable course pages.

This is useful when the slides are already designed for training and visual layout matters.

If you want more editable, native Affinity course pages, use a text-based source document when possible.

### Before You Start: Add The Document To Cora Documents

Before using Literal Import, the source document must be available in Cora Documents.

Upload or add the document to Cora Documents first, then select it when creating your Imagine course with Literal Import.

This matters because Literal Import uses the selected Cora Document as the source material for the course. If the document is not in Cora Documents, it will not be available for Literal Import.
